The Copenhagen Accord: Planet fucked - official
from freedom, 19 December 2009: "In a unanimous statement issued on Friday 18th December the Governments of the world gave the go-ahead to runaway climate change. That’s about it from Copenhagen. There was no target for reducing carbon dioxide emissions, no limit to the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, nothing more than a pious wish that average global temperature should not rise more than 2 degrees above pre global warming levels..." more
Taking care of business: How big business has hijacked climate talks
from climate-imc, 26 November 2009: "Until recently, many of the globe's biggest corporations were firmly in the climate change denial camp - and funding spurious research to back up their claims. Now a new realism has emerged. Climate change is no longer rejected as a bogus theory the economy can ill afford. Instead, it's a business opportunity..." more
No bell curve in the jaws of peak oil
from Energy Bulletin, 26 October 2009: "What proved to be correct for individual nations, well-defined regions, and specific fields in the relatively early stages of exhausting traditional oil - namely reaching an “objective” maximum rate of output and declining smoothly thereafter - seems staggeringly improbable for the entire world in the sunset phase of the petroleum age. What looked like a summit, arching against a clear sky of commonplace obviousness from a distance, is turning out to be the mirage of a Sphinx from the near. To show this, we need to keep in mind that in the life of any geographically defined oil wealth - from a single well to the planet - there are three peaks: One relates to physics, the other to economics, and the third is the actually recorded, de facto peak..." more
Council of Canadians: 2010 Olympics will leave legacy of social & environmental destruction

However, with less than half a year until the 2010 Games begin, we are gravely concerned by the increasing evidence that these worthy aspects are being overwhelmed, if not totally supplanted, by an “Olympic industry” focused on real-estate development and massive corporate marketing opportunities..." more

Congo-Brazzaville: Return to Tarmageddon
from oilsandstruth, 28 August 2009: "An Italian company's plan to develop tar sands in the Congo has activists worried. You’ve likely heard about the tar sands in northern Alberta. There's less chance you've heard of the tar sands in the Republic of Congo (sometimes called Congo-Brazzaville)... Congolese activists gathered at a recent civil-society meeting in Italy around the G8 do know that Eni, an Italian oil company, has signed agreements with the scandal-ridden government of President Denis Sassou-Nguesso for tar sands development, as well as for a palm oil plantation with the intention to make biofuels... more

Police Review: magazine cartoon - "In staggeringly poor taste"
from J4J campaign, 18 November 2008: We would imagine that, in the midst of the inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes, publications aimed at and widely read by serving police officers would show greater sensitivity in the way they talk about fatal shootings by the police. But evidently not. The magazine "Police Review", in its 14 November edition, decided that the introduction of new rules preventing firearms officers from conferring after a shooting was best illustrated by this appalling cartoon. more
