WOMBLES - Solidarity & support for prisoners

This section includes reports about radical prisoner solidarity campaigns and related issues. It is not intended to be a comprehensive survey of those imprisoned as a result of social struggles; rather, we hope to highlight current and recent cases of imprisoned comrades to show how important prisoner solidarity can be in making time inside more bearable.
View Prisoners articles as headlines only here.

from bristolabc, 16 March 2010: "Our friends at the long running Brighton ABC group have just released the latest issue of their Active Solidarity freesheet. One of the political prisoners they feature is Jock Palfreeman. Jock is serving 20 years in a Bulgarian prison after defending himself against a large gang of nazis, one of whom he killed in self-defence, and wounded another. Matters have taken a turn for the worse for him; on 19 February he was placed in complete isolation (solitary confinement), the first prisoner to be so treated..." more

Amadeu Casellas set free

from thisisourjob, 9 March 2010: "Amadeu Casellas walked out of prison this afternoon after 24 years behind bars. Justice Department sources disclosed that a 2008 Constitutional Court decision, in which it was ruled that time served in preventive detention should count toward a prisoner’s final sentence, has finally been applied to Casellas’ case. After a sentence recalculation based on statutory discrepancies between old and new penal codes, authorities concluded that Casellas had served eight years too many, and released him..." more

New letter from anarchist prisoner Panagiotis Masouras

from various sources, 7 March 2010: "Captive behind the walls of a modern reformatory for democracy’s transgressors. The days, the months, the years will be gradually killed off with the discipline embodied by the proud stance of revolutionaries, the ones who are trying to achieve the impossible. Embraces will also die out in the echoing, funereal silence of submissive prisoners..." more

Eric McDavid Update: Government response to appeal filed, donations needed

from infoshop, 24 February 2010: "On Friday, February 19, the government filed their reply brief to Eric's appeal. The document they filed was 90 pages long - 90 pages of lies and slander in their continued effort to demonize Eric and justify their own inhumanity in locking a person in prison for 20 years for "thought crime. The document is full of continued attacks on Eric's character as well as misrepresentations and lies about the actual unfolding of events. All of this, combined with outrageous distortions of the law, make the government's reply a rather distasteful read..." more

On the appeal trial against the Lecce anarchists

from turbellaria, 21 February 2010: "The sentence of appeal was to be finally pronounced on February 10 2010, but it has once again been postponed following the decision of the jury to examine further ‘evidence’ provided by the public prosecutor. The intention to charge the anarchists involved in this shameful story of repression with yet more serious charges is evident, and it is also clear how the local powerful are determined to silence the entire matter as well as the violence and the abuse inflicted on immigrants by the operators of the Regina Pacis concentration camp..." more

from various sources, updated 3 March 2010: "At 3.30pm loud clapping come from inside the court. A few minutes later supporters, who had been allowed in the court, emerged to announce that the Belgrade 6 were going to be released in effect on bail. There was plenty of confusion but it later confirmed that they were going to be released until March 23rd when they would still face terrorist charges..." more

Illegal police surveillance of the Tarnac Ten

from infoshop, 27 January 2010: "The Tarnac Ten have been closely surveilled. This isn't a scoop. But there's a problem: the phone taps and videos were made outside of any legal framework. The Tarnac Affair hasn't ceased to resound. And the echoes have caused trouble for a prosecution that has already been amply attacked by the lawyers for the defense. On Wednesday, two new stones were thrown into Judge Thierry Fragnoli's pool. Two components that could weaken the entire proceedings..." more

from email, 19 December 2009: "Jeff “Free” Luers, political prisoner and environmental activist, was released from the Columbia River Correctional Institution this morning (Dec 16, 2009) after serving nine and half years. Luers was originally sentenced in 2001 to twenty two years and eight months for the politically motivated arson of three SUV's at a car dealership in Eugene, OR. This sentence was deemed grossly disproportionate to the damage sustained by the car dealership and was condemned by legal professionals, human rights groups and activists worldwide. At an appeal hearing in 2007 it was ruled that Luers' original sentence was illegal, and was consequently reduced to ten years..." more

via irr, 16 December 2009: "Since it opened earlier this year, the UK's newest and biggest immigration prison has barely had a day without trouble. However, Corporate Watch has learnt that things have become "much worse" lately, both for the detainees and for their visitors.
