Liverpool 25th November: Defy ID cards - No One is Illegal

On 25th November, the government will begin introducing ID cards for non-EU nationals living in the UK. We invite all opponents of social control to join us at a protest in Liverpool outside Reliance House (the Border Agency’s offices and a short-term immigration prison) at 12 noon on that day. Reliance House is one of the six centres in the UK for ID cards processing. Other groups campaigning against ID cards on that day are Manchester NO2ID and Liverpool Defy ID and we hope to see Merseyside No Borders activists there as well. We will travel there as a group, meet at 9am on the steps of the Student Union of Manchester University, Oxford Road. We will try to get everyone into minibuses leaving from there or take the train together from Oxford Road station (£6.20 return with railcard) if there are too many of us. In Liverpool, assemble in Exchange Flats at 11am and then move around the corner to Reliance House, 20 Water Street, L2 8XU, for the protest from noon to 1pm.
Friday, Nov.14, at 11h in the morning we distributed 200 A4-size leaflets in
front and around the building of the Economy and Comerce Section of the Greek
Embassy, in the center of Lisbon, leaving some of them inside the building also.
The leaflets included a small introdutory text to the prisoners' struggle, a few
of their demands, and a chronology of the events until that day. Besides, it
also included the following text:" ---- Prison is everywhere, in all our life.
Constantly we are watched, controlled, identified, listened… it is the cop, the
surveillance camera, the court, the judge, the police station, and our entire
reality of forced interactions. It is the fear of being what we are, of saying

Robert “Seth” Hayes is a U.S. political prisoner and former member of the Black Panther Party who has been imprisoned in New York state for more than three decades. When Seth was convicted in 1974, his sentence was 25 years to life. The implicit understanding at the time of his sentencing was that Seth would serve 25 years as a minimum, after which time he would be eligible for release based on his record and conduct in prison.

In December of 2008, Seth will be going before the parole board for the sixth time.

Amidst the glitter and glam of the opening ceremony of the 49th Thessaloniki
Film festival about 500 anarchists marched in protest against the detention of
comrades along Tsimiski St this evening.

They were also showing their solidarity with the thousands in Greek jails
currently on hunger strike over inhumane conditions which have been repeatedly
condemned by European and Greek human rights organisations.

In Leicester, tenants’ are rightly up in arms about being tied into a domestic
heating scheme whose prices are poised to almost double during this month, an
increase that was announced last month by the city council. ---- District
heating is used by some city councils to supply hot water and heating to city

prisons, shopping centres) through hot water pipes running underground. In the
East Midlands, both Nottingham and Leicester City Councils run district heating
schemes which are promoted as ‘green’ alternatives to individual domestic

Genova trial ends in shame

Acquittals and ridiculously mild sentences for the butchers at DIAZ
The senders of the violence perpetrated on July 21, 2001 at the Diaz school in Genova during the G8summit were acquitted yesterday, after a long trial. No jail, no punishment at all for Giovanni Luperi, and for Francesco Gratteri, who ok-ed the massacre. Out of 29 defendants only 13 were sentenced. Shame on the system, shame on the government, shame on those who showed no courage. Our heart goes out to Carlo Giuliani's mother, to Mark Covell, who was at the trial yesterday, and visibly incredulous, to the victims of the beatings, the accusations, the humiliations. Let us not forget.

Anarchist Prisoner Harold Thompson 1942-2008

Long time prisoner and jailhouse lawyer and activist Harold H Thompson has died Tuesday November 11th of heart failure.
Harold born in 1942 to Irish parent in West Virginia, USA was an anarchist activist during the 1960’s and 1970’s. His exploits, including expropriation of capital to fund further activities, landed him in prison on more than on occasion over the years.
In 1978 however the mother of one of his children was brutally murdered by a man named Crawley who was soon released after agreeing to turn states evidence. After his release he heard bragging in a bar that he was going to kill Harold's child and the other child who had testified against him.

Ennis court adjourns case against CIA plane watcher Edward Horgan

Veteran peacekeeper disappointed not to have his day in court
In Ennis district court today Thursday 13 November, Judge Mangan adjourned a charge of obstructing/impeding an airport fire officer, brought against the former UN peacekeeper and anti-torture campaigner, Edward Horgan, of Castletroy, Co. Limerick. Having heard that Horgan’s summons cited the wrong act and did not come as stated from the Director of Public Prosecutions, the case was adjourned to 8 January.

Horgan went to the airport on 18 June 2008, on a tip-off that Learjet N54PA was due to arrive from Florida via Newfoundland. Flight logs showed that N54PA had landed several times, including 3 June 2008, at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.

Horgan walked into the security office to demand that the aircraft be searched for prisoners, and its crew questioned about recent and past activities, and insisted on remaining while the plane was being refuelled in order to confirm whether Gardai searched the aircraft or not.

Muhammad Salah Muhammad Khawajah, 12, is a student and a resident of Nilin in the Ramallah District. His testimony was given to Iyad Hadad on 18 September 2008 at the witness's home:

I live with my family in Nilin. We live on the ground floor of the house, my two uncles and their families live on the first floor, and my grandmother lives on the second floor.

Last Thursday [11 September] around 3:00am, I woke up from my mother's shouts. She was shouting, "Get up! Get up! The army is here!" My father wasn't home that night. I got up and went out with her to the inner courtyard of the house. There were about 12 soldiers there, and their faces were painted black. One soldier wore a black hat that covered his face. He sat on the stairs outside the house and didn't take part. I think he was a collaborator who led them to houses.

From <a href="http://news.infoshop.org/article.php?story=20081109160123682">Infoshop</a>
Some notes on the Guelph wood squat, community support, and the "false" something or other of insurrectionary anarchism.
I was late, and by the time I got close enough to the fire to recognize people's faces, I could see that an informal go around was already in progress. My friends spoke passionately about skills they had learned here, relationships that had been fostered, and, for some, a feeling that they'd come into their own. People I’d never met before enthusiastically explained that though this was their first time here, the stories they'd heard carried with them more than just a glimmer of hope. Others recounted their first taste of what life outside of capitalist mediation might feel like, and how it had strengthened their resolve. Someone who'd lived in Guelph for longer than I recounted the history of these former jail lands. Some cast startled looks as they learned that our fire pit was in the middle of the old shooting range, where guards had previously honed their aim on live targets just for the hell of it. Some of us smiled knowingly because, like us, other would-be escapees had used these same woods for shelter.

We are writing in support of Miriam Sampaio, a local activist based in both Montreal and Lisbon , Portugal. She is currently studying for her MFA degree at Concordia University. Miriam has been an activist for two decades, working around women and queer issues, worked in rape crisis centers, as well as an organizer supporting indigenous sovereignty struggles, prison abolition, and both political prisoner and prisoner support work. She is the daughter of political refugees who fled Portugal in the 60's and has been traveling to and from Portugal as an artist and a researcher, exposing the injustices and abuses by the fascist regime that took place in Portugal from 1926 - 1974.

ADDAMEER UPDATE: MILITARY JUDGE REJECTS APPEAL ON CONTINUED DETENTION OF SALWA SALAH AND SARA SIUREH

From <a href="http://addameer.org" target="blank">Addameer</a>
November 3, 2008

On November 2, 2008 the Military Judge at Ofer Military Court rejected the appeal by Addameer Attorney Mahmoud Hassan to reduce the administrative detention order of Salwa Salah and Sara Siureh. This means that both girls will remain in prison until their current administrative detention order ends on January 3, 2009. It is not certain that both girls will even be released on this date. Administrative detention orders can be renewed indefinitely under Israeli Military Law. Both girls are now in Damoun prison in Israel and are being held with the other Palestinian adult female detainees. They have now spent more than 5 months in Israeli prisons, being held without charge or trial.

Shut Down the Camp! Luk Lejren! Activists break the fence at Sandholm immigration prison in Denmark &amp; spark national debate

<a href="#"></a>Edited from a report by activists who took part in the Shut Down the Camp! (Luk Lejren!) action on 25th October:"2-3000 participants went from Allerød train station, 30 km away from Copenhagen, to the biggest refugee camp in Denmark, Sandholm, to cut down the fence around the place. Before the day, local nazis and anti-semitic groups cut one main train-cable to prevent us from arriving in time, the delay just scaled the whole thing up and more people came running! In front of the camp several hundreds of people tried to reach the fence to tear it down, the cops responded with LOTS of tear gas - both against the teams of mobile fencecutters and the standing demo also attended by children and elderly people - but the fence was torn down at several spots, game over." Following the action, activists have been busy pushing the agenda in the national media. The action was covered at every level, and has resulted in several different discussions:1) Some in the <a href="http://luklejren.smartlog.dk/leftist-parties-want-to-close-the-refugee-camps-page1283" target="_blank">parliamentary opposition</a> are suggesting an end to the existing refugee camps and the indefinite detention that asylum seekers are subjected to.2) The cops have been forced to explain their brutal use of teargas &amp; pepperspray against the demonstration.3) A central goal of the action was to pull the issue out of the closed system of NGO's and politicians, to amplify the conflict at every level. Activists debated against politicians in different live-shows, called them racists etc., and exposed the role of the Red Cross that run all the refugee camps in Denmark. Activists have daily contact with the asylum seekers inside both Sandholm and other Danish camps. Asylum seekers were satisfied with the action, and everyone is planning the next move together, with more people joining in every day.Introduction to the action in English: <a href="http://luklejren.dk/spip.php?article14" target="_blank">http://luklejren.dk/spip.php?article14</a>Watch video of demos and direct action on Shut Down the Camp/Luk Lejren Danish website: <a href="http://luklejren.dk" target="_blank">http://luklejren.dk</a>Hour by hour acccunt of the action and link to pictures: <a href="http://luklejren.smartlog.dk/" target="_blank">http://luklejren.smartlog.dk/</a>Find some more pictures here on Belgian website: <a href="http://www.cemab.be/news/2008/10/5966.php" target="_blank">http://www.cemab.be/news/2008/10/5966.php</a>

[10-30-08] MST Informa #155: Fifth International Conference of La Via Campesina

Maputo, the capital of Mozambique was the site of the 5th International Conference of La Via Campesina. More than 600 men and women peasants and small farmers from 60 countries met from October 16 to the 23rd to discuss the situation in agriculture, emphasizing that the solution to the problem of hunger is Food Sovereignty. In contrast to the agribusiness model, which does not ensure the dignified survival of people in the countryside, we unite to struggle for agrarian reform, the preservation of biodiversity, water, seeds, and peasant farming.
