Greece: This is Just the Beginning!

By Christakis Georgiou
Behind Greece, a group of other countries are waiting to take their turns. The Greek deficits aren't much higher than those of Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Italy, or even Great Britain...If Greece receives aid, it's a signal that the major European powers...will do the same for others. That would diminish the pressures put on them to impose austerity measures.

Political leader warns of massive UK unrest

BRITAIN could face massive political and social unrest on a scale similar to Greece, a political party leader has warned. The Guardian reported that Liberal Democrat Nick Clegg was concerned that the next government might not successfully rally the public behind plans to slash public spending and cut the state's £178bn deficit. So far, the UK has only seen symbolic protest against the excesses of neo-liberalism, such as the anti-G20 protests in London last year (pictured), but Clegg, a self-confessed admirer of Margaret Thatcher, apparently has something on a much larger scale in mind. The report says that in a speech to the Institute for Public Policy Research thinktank, Clegg will say a new government could be 'torn to pieces' if it tries to 'ram through' spending cuts without wider public consent."He will argue that the scale of the cuts needed to tackle the deficit is so great that it will be essential to engage the public in the process."If the structural deficit in the public finances is to be eliminated without further tax increases, at some point in the next eight years government spending will have to fall by as much as 10%."That means there is an enormous risk ahead. In a democracy, dramatic change cannot be imposed from above or it will fail. It has to be led by a process of political engagement," he will say."You only have to look at the scale of industrial unrest in Greece to see that it is impossible to reduce a public deficit quickly if you do not find a way to persuade people to go along with the process."If we do not find a way to take the people of Britain with us on this difficult journey of deficit reduction, we will not be able to make the journey. We will instead follow Greece down the road to economic, political and social disruption."If a government tries to ram through major change to public spending solely through the usual Westminster combination of machismo and threats from the whips, it will not only fail, it could find itself torn to pieces."

Our Greek friends from The Void Network have had a horrible incident happen in Berkeley California. Their vehicle has been broken into and their livelihood has been taken. This threatens the rest of their tour and the great success of their tour up till now. The tour has been possible up till now by people passing the hat. This has been (barely) enough to cover gas but this situation requires explicit help.

More following the killing of Lambros Fountas - from the Greek press

from Greek daily KathimeriniDNA tests thwart terror probeDNA tests on drops of blood found at the scene of a shootout last Wednesday in southeastern Athens match the blood of Lambros Fountas, the 35-year-old terrorist suspect killed in the exchange of fire, according to counterterrorism police officers, who had hoped the blood would shed light on the identity of a second man who eluded arrest. The blood found at the scene of the shooting also failed to match blood samples gathered from the sites of recent terrorist attacks and bank robberies, thwarting police efforts to link Fountas to domestic terrorist groups such as Sect of Revolutionaries and Revolutionary Struggle.Police believe that the second suspect is a member of an anti-establishment group with links to another recently formed terrorist group, the Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire. Officers who were at the scene of the shooting last Wednesday claim to have recognized the second suspect before he fled.Police have stepped up their investigation into Fountas’s suspected involvement in terrorist activities after a search of his home at the end of last week turned up a detailed map of the capital’s surveillance cameras.Sources told private television channel Mega yesterday that police fear a revenge attack by domestic terrorists for Fountas’s death. These fears were fueled by the discovery of the map, which pinpoints all the capital’s street cameras and includes notes regarding the scope and blind spots of each camera’s lens.Officers have also boosted their search for a possible hideout and have intensified surveillance of the dead man’s relatives and close friends. Seven keys found at Fountas’s home in Ambelokipi, near central Athens, are being tested but have not yet matched any addresses linked to the suspect.Police have also asked the director of the private diagnostic clinic where Fountas was employed for a list of the dates the 35-year-old had taken off work to determine whether they correspond with those of any domestic terrorist attacks.

A report on the working class struggles against austerity measures in Greece by Proles and Poor’s Credit Rating Agency aka TPTG a greek autonomous communist group.

In periods of crisis, such as the current period of overaccumulation crisis, capitalists use the politics of “public debt” in order to devise new ways to intensify exploitation. In contrast with capitalist upturns when the private debt is increased, downturns are characterized by the increase of the “public debt”.
