Liberty & Solidarity: Benefit for sacked Visteon workers @ Freedom, Whitechapel, 9 May 2009
from friends, updated 12 May 2009:
Visteon BBQ report back
Liberty & Solidarity London held a successful and well attended benefit BBQ to raise funds for sacked workers now picketing the Visteon factory. With people from all over London and other parts of the UK coming to show their support for the workers. Activists, families, and other supporters enjoyed food, drink and music for the best part of the day and well into the night. The event raised £210 which will be sent onto the workers to pay for much needed supplies.
A letter of thanks from the Enfield workers show how important this grassroots solidarity is;
"At present, the only financial support we are getting is from individuals, groups and union branches like yourself. Without this money we would find it difficult to fund the dispute and pay workers expenses while on picket duty"
With workers on the site already having won their original demand for a fair redundancy package, bringing Visteon to their knees; wee see that the hard work of the supports groups, the numerous donations and benefit events and tremendous air of solidarity has sent a message to the bosses that workers are prepared to stick up for each other during the coming economic crisis. And that while Union leadership may be lacking, the rank and file, with support from the community, is still capable of victory.
We once again wish the Enfield workers victory, and will certainly have many more successful events in the future.

NB -- There is also a Conference 09 benefit gig at the Cross Kings that night, so we'll have a break at 7pm to let people know that's happening.
If we still have a lot of people who'd rather stay at Freedom, we'll put another shrimp on the barbie and some tempo on the music. Considering that is bands and this is DJs we shouldn't be eating into each others audience.

Police Review: magazine cartoon - "In staggeringly poor taste"
from J4J campaign, 18 November 2008: We would imagine that, in the midst of the inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes, publications aimed at and widely read by serving police officers would show greater sensitivity in the way they talk about fatal shootings by the police. But evidently not. The magazine "Police Review", in its 14 November edition, decided that the introduction of new rules preventing firearms officers from conferring after a shooting was best illustrated by this appalling cartoon. more
