UK: "We will not be intimidated" – Mass resistance to new offence of publishing information about police officers
from email via fitwatch, 18 November 2008: The new Counter Terrorism Bill, currently in The Lords, contains an amendment to Section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000. This amendment will make it an offence, punishable by up to ten years imprisonment, to publish or elicit information about any police constable "of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism"... This is a call from Fitwatch for a mass publishing of information on police officers on the day this Bill receives its Royal Assent. The date will be published as soon as we have it, but it is likely to be early 2009. more

But evidently not. The magazine "Police Review", in its 14 November edition, decided that the introduction of new rules preventing firearms officers from conferring after a shooting was best illustrated by this appalling cartoon. more

Prisoner escapes German jail in cardboard box
from bbc, 15 November 2008: A manhunt is under way in western Germany for a convicted drug dealer who escaped by mailing himself out of jail. The 42-year-old Turkish citizen - who was serving a seven-year sentence - had been making stationery with other prisoners destined for the shops. At the end of his shift, the inmate climbed into a cardboard box and was taken out of prison by express courier. His whereabouts are still unknown. more
France: Seven charged over TGV rail sabotage

To protest this, he launched a hunger strike over the summer, fasting for 76 days, until the prison authorities promised to grant him a series of furloughs and then place him in the third degree (open prison, in which a prisoner can leave during the day and a certain number of nights). more

Uproar as top police cleared of attack on Genoa G8 protesters
