Cambridge: National Climate Camp Gathering info, 20-21 June 2009
from email, 15 June 2009:
The next National Gathering will be in Cambridge, land of bicycles and a lovely river.
Agenda
First and foremost on the agenda will be planning this summer's Camps for Climate Action! We will have a welcome for newcomers before the main meeting starts on Saturday, and there are rumours of proposals and discussions about wind turbine manufacturing lay-offs in the Isle of Wight, international solidarity with people in developing countries, police informants and the camp's position on anti-capitalism.
Kids' Space
The Cambridge gathering is going to have a really good kids' space. We think that it's important that gatherings are inclusive of everyone, including those with children, and that the whole camp takes responsibility for ensuring that childcare is available. We welcome people to bring children, although we can't cater for very young children, and will be providing childcare during all the hours of the meetings. Kids activities will include art, games, and playground time...
Practicalities
VENUE
The venue is the Museum of Technology, Cheddars lane, Cambridge, which is by the river, and near a common with cows and a children's playground.
For directions to the venue, see 'getting there' below.
TIMINGS
The gathering will be on the 20th and 21st of June. The gathering will begin at 10 am on Saturday morning (with a welcome for newcomers at 9.30), and we will try to wrap up by 5 on Saturday. On Sunday we will start off at 10am again, and finish around 5pm. More detailed timings will be available when we send out the agenda on Tuesday.
ACCOMMODATION
Crashpad accommodation will be available at the venue on Saturday night, and there is a common nearby which you can camp on if you want to bring a tent. You will need to bring a sleeping bag and sleeping mat. If you are arriving on the Friday night and need accommodation, or if you need to sleep in a bed or a quiet space, please email gathering[at]climatecamp.org.uk and we will find you somewhere to sleep.
If you would like to stay on Sunday night for a midsummer bonfire, bring a tent.
FOOD AND SOCIAL
We will be serving delicious vegan food during the weekend (Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner, Sunday breakfast and lunch). We will also be selling vegan cakes to fundraise for the local Climate Camp group. On Saturday night there is a big social organising by a local artist-activists collective, with live music and DJs. For those who want a quieter night, there will be a film projector, so bring along your favourite activist flicks!
For those of you who don't need to leave on Sunday night, we will celebrate the summer solstice with a bonfire by the river, and we welcome you to join us with tents.
DONATIONS
We will be asking for a suggested donation of £15 to cover the costs of the weekend. You can give more or less depending on what you can afford.
TRAVEL POOL
As always there will be a travel pool operating to allow those who have travelled long distances to receive a contribution towards travel costs from those who haven't travelled as far.
GETTING THERE
The venue is by the river, about 30 minutes walk from Cambridge station. You can get there on bus number 3 (or 12 from the coach station). Cambridge is bicycle country, so bring a bike if you can! Cambridge station is 45 minutes by train from London, or 1 hour from Peterborough. You can also get to Cambridge by coach.
See route description below (from station and coach station to venue). We may also be able to help with lifts and carrying luggage if necessary - please get in contact with gathering[at]climatecamp.org.uk if you have any mobility needs.
Parking in Cambridge is very difficult - please contact us in advance if you need to park a vehicle, including live-in vehicles.

Police Review: magazine cartoon - "In staggeringly poor taste"
from J4J campaign, 18 November 2008: We would imagine that, in the midst of the inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes, publications aimed at and widely read by serving police officers would show greater sensitivity in the way they talk about fatal shootings by the police. But evidently not. The magazine "Police Review", in its 14 November edition, decided that the introduction of new rules preventing firearms officers from conferring after a shooting was best illustrated by this appalling cartoon. more
