Open meeting on migration during ESF
from email, 17 September 2008:
European Social Forum is coming to Malmö and Asylgruppen (”the asylum group”) would like to take this opportunity to invite groups and people who happen to be in town anyway to a big open meeting about borders, Schengen and anything else that makes us angry. The plan is to meet, put faces to names of people working with similar issues in other countries, establish contacts, and be inspired by one another.
The meeting will take place on Thursday 18:00-20:00 at St Gertrudsgatan 4:
It is always useful to have contacts abroad, for instance pending deportations within Schengen, if you want to kick off an international campaign or simply to exchange ideas and hope! Therefore it would be great if everyone who feels the urge could briefly introduce themselves and their work. A few specific things that we thought we could talk about during the meeting are:
-The 15-17th of July 2009, there will be an informal meeting between the EU’s ministers for judicial and internal affairs in Stockholm. Would it be possible to arrange a No Border-camp or some other activity before or during this meeting?
-What is the situation like at the various detention centres around Europe? What campaigns/methods are there in different countries? Is it possible to do more joint actions?
-The Dublin Convention makes life difficult for many asylum seekers in the Schengen area. How can we work together against this (specifically deportations to Greece?)?
-What experiences are there among the meeting’s participants to participate in/cooperate with/support self-organized groups of undocumented migrants? How can the co-operation between different groups and countries be strengthened?
Ideally, the meeting will end with some sort of action plan – a way of exchanging information, distribution of practical tasks and dates to aim for, consensus about what we want to happen during the minister meeting in the summer of 2009.
Hope to see you soon! Love and rage,
Asylgruppen i Malmö

Police Review: magazine cartoon - "In staggeringly poor taste"
from J4J campaign, 18 November 2008: We would imagine that, in the midst of the inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes, publications aimed at and widely read by serving police officers would show greater sensitivity in the way they talk about fatal shootings by the police. But evidently not. The magazine "Police Review", in its 14 November edition, decided that the introduction of new rules preventing firearms officers from conferring after a shooting was best illustrated by this appalling cartoon. more
