EuroMayDay: Free Helsinki Carnival on the eve of May Day
from email, 15 April 2008:
We Make the City Go Round! The City Belongs to Us!
EuroMayDay goes Free Helsinki Carnival on the Eve of May Day
How is it possible that cops can stop people in malls and in the streets based on skin color? Why is our tax money used to make way for advertising by buffing graffiti? Why do we have to pay for transit in town, although the city would cease to function without us?
We want to build the city in our own image, a city where generating collective wealth is more important than protecting the property of the richest few. In our vision creativity and innovation do not mean elite privileges but freedom for all and a chance to create independent culture.
EuroMayDay has for the last few years been a day of struggles of the precariat in more than 20 European cities. This year on the eve of May Day our struggles in the metropolitan space are put forth once again.
We are forced to accept any work at any conditions. We work our asses off in shit jobs just to pay more and more to keep mobile and to live in the metropolis or even just to stay in Finland. We pay ridiculous fines to the city for making our surroundings come to life and spicing up the urban space.
We've had enough of the madness, hypocrisy and violence of the security personnel linked to the "Stop Töhryile" anti-graffiti campaign. End the 10-year campaign of repression now!
Those of us that as migrants work in cleaning, building, fast food or simply just move around in urban space, are raided by border police. Stop the racist raids now!
We do not pay for public transport because that is our basic right. The control of people in transit does not increase security but forces us to live in constant jeopardy. We demand a well functioning public transport system free of charge!
We invite everyone to the streets of Helsinki to celebrate with us on the eve of May Day. The city belongs to us who make living in it worthwhile!
The Free Helsinki Carnival 30.4. at 18.00. Asa, Hosni, Jag, Julma-Henri, Liljan loisto, SuperJanne ja Tuomas Toivonen performing at Narinkkatori starting at 18.00. The parade sets of from Narinkkatori at 19.00.

Police Review: magazine cartoon - "In staggeringly poor taste"
from J4J campaign, 18 November 2008: We would imagine that, in the midst of the inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes, publications aimed at and widely read by serving police officers would show greater sensitivity in the way they talk about fatal shootings by the police. But evidently not. The magazine "Police Review", in its 14 November edition, decided that the introduction of new rules preventing firearms officers from conferring after a shooting was best illustrated by this appalling cartoon. more
