Vienna - Mondo Mayday : Precarious working, precarious living - fighting together!
For the third time the MayDay-parade takes place on the 1st May 2007 in Vienna. It intends to draw the attention to the progressive precarisation of living and working conditions.
But the MayDay does not only point at this threatening process by joyful self-organisation, it is also an invitation to overcome fragmentation and to fight together!
Where are the precarious people?
Actually everywhere. Illegalized, seasonal and fixed-term employees, quasi- or the so-called "new self-employed", low-wage workers, unemployed, freelance workers, project workers, reproduction workers, care workers, house workers, part-time or subcontract labour and their mixtures and fusions have one thing in common: They all lead to precarity or are more or less precarious. While employees in supermarkets work for lowest wages and students muddle themselves through mini-jobs and unpaid traineeships, workers in culture and art as well as cleaners have to work without social security.
Does precarity create anti-solidarity?
Precarity produces insecurity, uncertainty and fear -- this is undisputed. On the one hand this implies the potential to use this fear and rage to unite in the struggle against precarity. On the other hand it can lead to the opposite, as seems to be more often the case. Not only that unions nowadays do not represent what they intended once, with precarity also new forms of racism and sexism - as well as their political instrumentalization - seem to go hand in hand. Let's oppose these developments together!
What can we do?
MayDay should function like a spark for inspiration: a call for acting in networks, an attempt for fighting together against capitalistic exploitation that is legitimized by expoiters with the "growing pressure of competition in the globalized world economy". With arguments about necessary savings and flexibilization precarious working conditions are declared as standard. But it does not have to be this way: We want to shape our lives autonomously!
MayDay is a call to become engaged with countermodels and utopias of living and working. It is an open, process-like platform for all precariouse, illegalized, criminalized, flexibilized etc. people. For all who want to fight in a self-organized manner and for those who want all when nothing is offered them, regardless of their status of employment or residence!!!
For that reason serveral hundred thousand people will also take to the streets this year on the 1st of May. And we also call on you to arrange and shape the third MayDay-Parade in Vienna together with us!
