Grow Heathrow wins first step in fight to rejuvenate third runway site
Heathrow residents and activists are celebrating today following the adjournment of the court case that was seeking to evict the squatted community garden project 'Grow Heathrow', set up on the site of the defeated third runway. The case has been adjourned to the Central London County Court after the Deputy District Judge ruled that higher authority was needed to rule on the case. Transition Heathrow member Jo Rake, 21, said: "We are celebrating todays ruling as a step towards rebuilding the Heathrow communities that were blighted for so long by the threat of airport expansion. The number of people who turned up at court today, from local residents to airport workers and activists, showed the importance of this project for the Heathrow communities, and also the wider campaign for food security. David Cameron talks about building a 'big society', we're already doing it." Over the past six months, the former Berkeley Nurseries site has been transformed from a derelict space to a thriving community garden and social space, playing host to a range of events, from a banquet and film screenings, to acting as a base for solidarity actions for striking airport workers. Local MP John McDonnell said: "This inspirational project has not only dramatically improved this derelict site but it has lifted the morale of the whole local community in the campaign against the third runway and in planning a sustainable future for our area. We cannot lose this inititiave and I will do all I can to enable it to continue." Many of the activists involved in Transition Heathrow have a background of taking direct action with Plane Stupid and don't intend to go without a fight. more >>
Demonstration against evictions of Roma, French Embassy, 04/09/10
The Irish Traveller Movement in Britain is calling for a demo at 1pm on Saturday 4th September outside the French Embassy (58 Knightsbridge) against the recent policies of the French Government, which have resulted in families with children as young as 2 weeks old being evicted with less than 30 minutes notice to gather their things and left homeless on the streets of France. Others have been packed onto planes with no choice and sent back to their home countries. Some of the Roma have lived in France all their lives. Others came from Romania or Bulgaria when they joined the EU in 2007. The French government is exploiting a loophole in EU legisaltion that expressly allows for restrictions on the right to move freely for reasons of public order, public security and public health. Around 5am 2nd September 2010, high court bailiffs turned up in force, for the second eviction attempt on the east London social center. around 30 officers failed to batter the grade 2 listed door in, and then moved on to the chain saws. This awoke residents sleeping inside who had seconds to react as the bailiffs, in a change in strategy started smashing through the grade 2 listed windows, despite being clearly labeled. squatter TV in Buenos Aires
Residents of the Buenos Aires squatter community called Villa 31 have started a TV station, the Latin American Herald Tribune reports.The new station is called Mundo Villa, and the article says it will offer original programming plus shows from three countries that many of the residents of Villa 31 hail from: Bolivia, Paraguay and Peru. "There are 25 guys in the neighborhood working to gather news, while journalism workshops are being given by students from different universities," said Mundo Villa TV director Victor Ramos.The paper reports the station will be available to 1500 households--a number that seems suspiciously small given that a local cooperative claims the neighborhood's population is more than 120,000.Ramos said his group would be meeting with the head of TV-Roc, the cable franchise that brings signal to Rocinha, most famous favela in Rio de Janeiro, to establish "a network of channels from Latin American slums."When I was in Rocinha in 2001, TV-Roc did no original news programming. Council failing on affordable housing Time to squat ---- To buy an average-price house in Herefordshire you would have to be earning ÃÂ48,856 a year. ---- Those are the findings of housing charity Shelter, which brands Herefordshire Council as one of the worst providers of affordable housing in England. ---- At the current rate of availability it would take almost eight and half years to house the estimated 5,207 households on the waiting list for affordable housing in the county. ---- Shelter found that 1,113 new affordable homes would need to be built each year in Herefordshire to keep up with local need. Hearing the noise I just made it in time to go into the courtyard where police, armed to the teeth and with their characteristic arrogance, blocked me.Later I was taken to a room where they read out the accusations for which I continue to be held. During the same procedure my hands were submitted to an examination, in search for traces of explosives. This examination was carried out without my knowing anything without anything being explained: a huge mistake on my part. The same examination was made against two other people who were in my beloved home: Vinicio Aguilera and Diego Morales, and is the only evidence that they have to accuse them. I tried to greet my fellow humans, canines and felines. One of my 4-legged comrades never stopped barking at the police. He never moved away from us. I stroked him and headed toward the front of the house, Biblioteka (CDAI), which was destroyed like a classic postcard of the totalitarian regimes. At that moment I was handcuffed, handcuffs that were my company for several hours on several occasions. In coming out from my beloved place, that the prosecutor would have described as "power centre", the press try to snap the perfect photo of the "bombers". They just received our deepest contempt. Three to six thousand New Orleans residents are living as squatters, a house-by-house survey of the crescent city has revealed. The Times-Picayune reports.UNITY, a local non-profit, surveyed 55,000 derelict buildings on 500 blocks chosen at random throughout the city. Among its interesting findings, the proportion of squatters in New Orleans who are elderly is four times the national average for homeless people--11.3 percent in NOLA vs. 2.8 percent throughout the US. The article suggests that these older squatters stay out of the city's shelter system because they want to "avoid the hubbub of traditional homeless shelters, preferring to hole up in vacant homes in familiar areas." This is totally understandable. How sad, then, that the solution UNITY proposes amounts to more of what the squatters fear: "increased funding for case workers, homeless shelters and mental health services, as well as more assistance for moderate and low-income homeowners still trying to repair their houses."Why not a program that works with the squatters to empower them to join together to bring the houses where they are currently encamped up to code? The fact that one in ten of these squatters is over 62 doesn't mean these people don't have skills to help the city rebuild. more >>

Police Review: magazine cartoon - "In staggeringly poor taste"
from J4J campaign, 18 November 2008: We would imagine that, in the midst of the inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes, publications aimed at and widely read by serving police officers would show greater sensitivity in the way they talk about fatal shootings by the police. But evidently not. The magazine "Police Review", in its 14 November edition, decided that the introduction of new rules preventing firearms officers from conferring after a shooting was best illustrated by this appalling cartoon. more
