BBC: LA police admit riot 'mistakes'

The head of the Los Angeles Police Department, William Bratton, has admitted that his officers made serious mistakes at the end of a May Day rally.

The admission came as Mr Bratton delivered a report on the immigration rally to the city's police commission. more

What is May Day?

May Day, or International Workers' Day - was originally the commemoration of the Chicago riots of 1886: in 1889, the first congress of the Second International, meeting in Paris for the centenial of the French Revolution called for international demonstrations on the 1890 anniversary of the Chicago riot.

These were so successful that May Day was formally recognized as an annual event at the International's second congress in 1891. The May Day Riots of 1894 and May Day Riots of 1919 occurred subsequently. more

London Mayday 2001: Mayday Monopoly

The theme for Mayday 2001 London events was the 'monopoly' game. Using the symbolism of the monopoly game, diverse groups performed autonomous actions throughout London relating to squares on the monopoly board.

The WOMBLES part of the day's mayhem was called for Oxford Street, the main shopping street of London.  more
