G8 Summit, Evian, France, 31st May - 3rd June 2003
The G8 summit is opening on June 1st in Evian, on the southern shore of Lake Geneva (Leman). Around Evian itself there is to be a large exclusion zone of several miles. Any attempt to get to the actual venue will end up with people confronted by police in the countryside far away from it. Alternative strategies have therefore been developed to overcome the obstacles in our way. more

Firstly, there were only a small number of medics, compared to the size of the crowd. The police started firing teargas, even when there was nothing really going on. They gave no warning in any language, and fired randomly into the crowd. more

A crew of us arrived in Geneva on Wednesday morning where we witnessed every single window in sight being boarded up - and not with chipboard either, but yellowish, fire-retardent wood - the first swiss person we met said: 'don't worry, it'll all be torn down', which it was, the night b4 the G8 started. more

Police Review: magazine cartoon - "In staggeringly poor taste"
from J4J campaign, 18 November 2008: We would imagine that, in the midst of the inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes, publications aimed at and widely read by serving police officers would show greater sensitivity in the way they talk about fatal shootings by the police. But evidently not. The magazine "Police Review", in its 14 November edition, decided that the introduction of new rules preventing firearms officers from conferring after a shooting was best illustrated by this appalling cartoon. more
